FREE PLAN: The Beginner’s Marathon Roadmap

Discover the essential pillars and recovery secrets that transform casual runners into marathon finishers.

The Marathon.

It's a beast and a beauty. And one that is just as much mental as it is physical. My belief, is anyone with a structured training approach, anyone can reach the finish line.

The Foundation: Time Frame and Structure

A successful build generally requires 18 to 22 weeks for true novices. This includes a base-building phase to condition your tendons and joints followed by a dedicated training block. Your week should be anchored by a "Long Run" on the weekend, progressively increasing in distance, supported by midweek easy runs and mandatory rest days

Fuelling and Performance

Hydration and nutrition are the engines of your progress. You must practice your fuelling strategy early to avoid hitting the "wall" at mile 20. I always test my race-day nutrition in advance (especially on sessions that simulate a race pace), to ensure it handles well. My favourite choices:

Electrolytes: Tailwind (not too potent / sweet, easy to get down)

Gels: Maurten (they're disgusting, pre-warning)

Snacks: Honeystinger (all I do now for nutrition - they have GF waffles too!

The Critical Balance: Sleep and Recovery

The most common mistake I see in beginners is neglecting the importance of sleep & recovery. Fitness isn't gained during the run; it's gained while you sleep and your muscles repair.

Are you overtraining or underrecovering?
If you experience persistent fatigue, irritability, or a plateau in performance, you may be facing the signs of overtraining. Often, the issue isn't the miles themselves but a lack of "recovering harder" through quality sleep, foam rolling, and low-impact cross-training.
