Overtraining Syndrome in Triathlon: Signs, Causes and Recovery
Share
Why More Training Is Making You Slower
The athlete who trains the most doesn't always win.
In endurance sport, the athlete who manages training load most intelligently over time, and knows when to push and when to back off, will consistently outperforms the one who just does more.
Overtraining syndrome is what happens when the balance tips too far for too long. And it is far more common than most athletes acknowledge.
In 2023 I trained 7 days a week, 20HRs total (working FT simultaneously meant sleep had to go out the window to log the hours). It was also the year I felt I made 0 progress in Triathlon.

The Five Signs
- Easy sessions feel hard: Zone 2 pace feels like zone 4 effort. Your heart rate is elevated at efforts that should be comfortable. This is the clearest early signal.
- Persistent mood disruption: Irritability, low motivation, flat affect. Cortisol disregulation from chronic high training load presents as mood changes before performance changes.
- Sleep disruption despite fatigue: Overtrained athletes often cannot sleep despite being exhausted, or sleep ten hours and wake still tired. Both patterns indicate nervous system overload.
- Increased illness frequency: Immune function degrades under chronic training overload. Athletes who are constantly picking up minor illnesses may be overtraining.
- Flat performance despite increased effort: More intervals, more volume, slower times. This is not a fitness problem. It is a recovery debt problem.
How to Recover
Recovery from overtraining syndrome requires a genuine reduction in load (not just a single rest day). I recommend two to three weeks of significantly reduced training volume. Nutrition needs to be adequate and timed around sessions. And sleep? Prioritize it.
The hardest part is the ego. Taking three weeks of easy training feels like falling behind, but in my case (and hundreds of others), it proved to be the fastest way back to progression.
