Canada has some of the most scenic and well-organized marathons, that sometimes get overlooked for the more iconic courses just south of the border. But, there are 5 main marathons in the Great White North, where you can find stacked fields, roaring crowds and an opportunity to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

1. BMO Vancouver Marathon
Vancouver, BC | May | thevancouvermarathon.ca
If you run one marathon in Canada, make it Vancouver. The course takes runners through some of the most visually dramatic urban scenery in the country: Stanley Park, the Seawall, Kitsilano, and views of the North Shore mountains that make kilometre 30 feel slightly less catastrophic than it usually does.
Course Profile
| Section | Distance | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Start to 10km | Stanley Park loop | Flat, fast, shaded |
| 10km to 21km | Seawall and False Creek | Flat, exposed to wind |
| 21km to 32km | Kitsilano and Point Grey | Rolling, some elevation |
| 32km to 42.2km | Return via Seawall | Flat, crowd support increases |
Total elevation gain is approximately 200 to 250 metres, concentrated in the middle third. The course is generally considered Boston Qualifier friendly, and the May timing means mild temperatures (typically 10 to 15 degrees Celsius on race morning)
Who It Suits
| Runner Type | Verdict |
|---|---|
| First marathon | Excellent: crowd support and scenery carry you |
| Boston Qualifier Attempt | Good: flat enough, organized |
| PR attempt | Good, weather dependent (can be wet in May) |
| Destination race | Excellent: one of Canada's most beautiful courses |
What to Know Before You Register
The race sells out fast. Registration opens in autumn for the May event and popular wave times fill quickly. If you are targeting a specific corral for a BQ attempt, register early and submit your qualifying time at registration.
Weather is the one variable. Vancouver in May can be 10 degrees and sunny or 10 degrees and raining steadily. Come prepared for both! Your gear choice on race morning matters more here than at most Canadian races.
HIVE athletes based in Vancouver and Kelowna frequently target this race as their primary spring goal. If you want a 16-week build toward Vancouver, reach out at coach@thehivetrainingcentre.com.

2. Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon
Toronto, ON | October | torontowaterfrontmarathon.com
Toronto Waterfront is arguably the fastest marathon course in Canada. It is an IAAF Gold Label road race, which means it meets the highest international standards for course measurement, timing, and elite athlete support. The October timing is ideal: temperatures typically sit between 5 and 12 degrees Celsius on race morning, which is close to the physiological sweet spot for marathon performance.
Course Profile
| Section | Distance | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Start to 15km | Downtown and Lakeshore | Flat, fast, large field |
| 15km to 30km | Eastern waterfront | Flat, exposed, less crowd |
| 30km to 38km | Return along lakeshore | Slight headwind common |
| 38km to 42.2km | Finish through downtown | Crowd support peaks |
Total elevation gain is under 100 metres. This is as close to a certified flat course as Canadian marathon running offers. The main challenge is wind off Lake Ontario in the second half, which is not reflected in the elevation profile but will absolutely appear in your split times.
Fast Facts
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| IAAF Label | Gold Label Race |
| Average finish temperature | 8 to 12°C |
| Typical field size | 25,000+ across all distances |
| Boston qualifier history | Consistently one of Canada's top BQ courses |
| Course records | Elite-level times regularly set here |
Who It Suits
Toronto Waterfront is best suited to runners chasing a time goal. The course, the field size, and the October weather combine to produce personal bests. If your goal is scenery and experience over pace, Vancouver or Quebec City may feel more rewarding. If your goal is a number, this is the race.

3. Scotiabank Calgary Marathon
Calgary, AB | May | calgarymarathon.com
Calgary is one of Canada's most underrated marathon destinations. The course is fast, the city is enthusiastic about the race, and the early May timing means you are running in spring conditions before summer heat becomes a factor. The one variable unique to Calgary is altitude: at 1,045 metres above sea level, your aerobic performance will be slightly reduced compared to sea level racing.
Altitude Consideration
| Altitude | Expected Performance Impact |
|---|---|
| Sea level | Baseline |
| 1,000m (Calgary) | Approximately 2 to 3% reduction in aerobic output |
| Recommendation | Adjust target pace by 15 to 20 sec/km if arriving from sea level |
If you live and train in Calgary, this is a non-issue. If you are travelling from the BC coast, arrive at least 10 days before race day or no more than 2 days before. The window between days 3 and 10 at altitude is the fatigue dip where performance is worst.
Course Profile
| Section | Character |
|---|---|
| First half | Flat, through residential Calgary and river pathways |
| Second half | Return loop, some gentle rolling terrain |
| Finish | Downtown Calgary, strong crowd finish |
Who It Suits
Calgary suits runners who are looking for a well-run, smaller field size without the intensity of Toronto's enormous field. The atmosphere is friendly, the organization is strong, and the course is conducive to a BQ attempt for sea-level athletes who plan their altitude adjustment properly. This is a very beginner-friendly atmosphere.

4. Ottawa Race Weekend Marathon
Ottawa, ON | May | runottawa.ca
Ottawa Race Weekend is the largest running event in Canada and one of the largest in North America, with over 50,000 participants across all distances. The marathon course takes runners past Parliament Hill, along the Ottawa River, through the Gatineau Hills, and across several of Ottawa's scenic bridges. It is a course with genuine character.
At a Glance
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Total participants (all distances) | 50,000+ |
| Marathon elevation gain | Approximately 200 metres |
| Course highlights | Parliament Hill, Alexandra Bridge, NCC pathways |
| Timing | Late May (can be warm) |
| BQ friendly | Yes, with caveats on heat |
The heat caveat is worth understanding. Ottawa in late May can be 10 degrees and ideal or 25 degrees and brutal. The 2022 race was run in near-record heat. If you are targeting a BQ, have a backup plan for pace if race morning temperatures are above 18 degrees.
Why Ottawa
The atmosphere at Ottawa Race Weekend is exceptional. The crowd support is consistent throughout the course, the city genuinely turns out for this event, and running past Parliament Hill at kilometre 5 is something most runners do not forget. For athletes who want the full race-day experience alongside a genuine time goal, Ottawa delivers both.

5. Marathon de Quebec
Quebec City, QC | August | marathondequebec.com
Quebec City is the most visually spectacular marathon in Canada and the most challenging on this list. The course runs through the historic streets of Old Quebec, past the Chateau Frontenac, along the St. Lawrence River, and through some of the city's most dramatic architecture. It is a bucket-list race in the truest sense.
Course Profile
| Section | Character |
|---|---|
| Old Quebec sections | Cobblestones, narrow streets, significant elevation |
| River sections | Flat, exposed to wind, scenically stunning |
| Return to finish | Uphill sections in final 8km |
The August timing is the main strategic consideration. Quebec City in August can be warm and humid, which will affect performance meaningfully. This is not the race to target if your primary goal is a personal best or a Boston Qualifier. It is the race to target if you want an experience you will describe to people for years.
Heat and Humidity Management
| Temperature | Strategy |
|---|---|
| Below 18°C | Race to time goal |
| 18 to 22°C | Adjust target pace by 15 to 30 sec/km |
| Above 22°C | Race by effort, not pace. Survival mode is valid. |
Who It Suits
Quebec City suits experienced runners who have already run a time-focused marathon and want something different. It suits runners who are drawn to history and atmosphere (or those who take heat and hill training very seriously, and understand its impact on their performance).
It does not suit first-time marathon runners who have not trained in heat, athletes primarily focused on a BQ attempt, or runners who have not done significant hill training.
HOW TO CHOOSE — DECISION TABLE
| Your Goal | Best Choice | Second Choice |
|---|---|---|

| Boston qualifier attempt | Toronto Waterfront | Ottawa |
| First marathon | Vancouver | Ottawa |
| Bucket-list experience | Quebec City | Ottawa |
| Local to Alberta | Calgary | Vancouver |
| Training in BC | Vancouver | Toronto Waterfront |
| Best late-season race | Toronto Waterfront | Quebec City |

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Which Canadian marathon is easiest to get a Boston qualifier at?
Toronto Waterfront is consistently the most BQ-friendly Canadian marathon. The flat course, cool October temperatures, and large competitive field make it optimal for time-focused runners. Vancouver is the second best option.
When should I register?
Vancouver and Toronto Waterfront both sell out. Register as soon as registration opens, typically 6 to 9 months before race day. Ottawa and Calgary have larger capacity but popular corrals fill. Quebec City registers later and is less likely to sell out.
Can I run a Canadian marathon as my first marathon?
Yes. Vancouver and Ottawa are the best first marathon experiences in Canada, combining manageable courses with outstanding atmosphere and crowd support.
Do I need a coach to train for a marathon?
You can train without a coach, but will it be easier (more fun) and much more successful with one? Yes. The difference between a generic plan from the internet and a plan built for your specific fitness, schedule, and target race is significant, particularly for runners chasing a specific time goal.
